Career Interest

Simply put; I have a passion for making computer technology work reliably. I've always loved the creativity software engineering, but I also understand and enjoy the problem-solving aspects of applying IT to business (TCO, ROI, change control, etc.). This wide interest has resulted in a diversified career with successful roles as a Software Engineer, IT Project Manager, Network Support, Security Specialist,, and Systems Administrator. I especially enjoy opportunities to create from the ground up, or bring formal structure to chaos. I'm proficient in multiple platforms (Unix, OpenVMS, Linux, Windows NT/2k), but a personal favoriate is Linux, which I have been involved with since 1992 and why I was an Open Source engineer at Red Hat.

Examples of past work include:

• I was a Lead Software Developer at and at . At DEC, I was a VAX/VMS specialist and core Engineer of DECmessageQ -- the industry's first platform independent message queuing middleware product (which later was purchased by BEA and became BEAmessageQ). I was also Team Leader of the product migration to the Alpha/VMS platform. At Red Hat, I was the project leader of the Linux High Availability Clustering technology, developer of the service failover funtionality in the open-source "piranha" software package, and co-creator of the Linux "High Availability Server" product. I also did QA work for Linux releases 6.1 - 7.1
• Software engineering; especially in platform migration, networking, interprocess communications, or Linux systems.
• Creating network infrastructure (servers, LAN/WAN, services) from scratch. This includes defining formal policies and procedures, cabling and equipment standards, establishing a Help Desk, evaluating technology, security policies and monitoring, remote access, Change Control, Outage tracking, staffing, web services, email, SANs, etc.
• Migration from VAX/VMS systems to other platforms.
• IT Project Management and middle management; including handling budgets of over $1mil, staffing, purchasing, outsourcing, negotiating contracts, etc.
• Windows NT, Unix, VMS, and Linux system administration.

I have extensive experience in both VMS and Linux, so if I were to name a dream job it would be to work at a firm rewriting VMS applications to run on Linux, or migrating IT infrastructure to Linux servers.

I typically look for work in one of the following roles:

• As the responsible party for infrastructure support and technology design. This can be as an IT Manager, Project Manager, Network Manager, or Systems Administrator.

• As a Unix/Linux/VMS software developer (C, shell, DCL, Perl, Java, PHP, SQL). Projects involving network communications, Linux, or the migration of VMS applications are of particular interest.
